There are a lot of different forms of social anxiety treatment.
Aside from the ones I will talk about here, people have found Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming (EMDR) to be effective.
There are many more, but I won’t go into all the options out there. Instead I will give you the most widely acknowledged one that is has been proven to be effective for social phobia.
I’ll then advice you on a treatment for social anxiety that is rapidly gaining popularity, and I’ll finally give you the in my experience best, scientifically proven to work and BY FAR most effective social anxiety treatment out there.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the premise that thoughts cause feelings. And that your feelings affect your behavior.
The therapy uncovers negative thinking, irrational beliefsand unwanted behaviors that cause your negative emotions.
These negative thoughts, beliefs and behaviors first get identified. Once that’s achieved the approach is to replace these with more rational, positive ones.
This in turn changes the way you think about social situations that give you anxiety. And as a result you’ll feel better, can think more clearly, and make better decisions.
Aside from that, CBT teaches you how to control the physical symptoms of your anxiety through various relaxation and breathing exercises.
And CBT also focuses on exposure therapy.
This is where you will systematically desensitize yourself to social situations you fear.
Together with your therapist you think of a social situation that you might fear.
For example saying hi to a colleague. Before facing the situation in real life you work with your therapist to minimize the amount of anxiety you experience when thinking about the fearful situation.
Then once you feel confident enough to face it in real life, you take the step and “expose” yourself to the situation.
Once you feel comfortable doing that, you go on to the next step. You slowly but surely expose yourself to more and more social situations. But you get less anxious and more and more confident the more situations you are able to face.
An additional form of social anxiety treatment in CBT is group therapy for social anxiety.
Here you practice role-playing and other methods to improve your social skills. This lessens your anxiety as you feel more competent and confident in your social abilities.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of social anxiety treatment that is rapidly gaining popularity.
It helps you to change your relationship with painful thoughts and feelings.
ACT assists you in uncovering your core values; the things in life that are important to you that motivate, guide and inspire you.
It teaches you to be in the present moment and to “just notice” and accept your reactions to the situation. And it then teaches you to ACT. To take action in alignment with your core values.
Now this might seem impossible for you, to just deal with the feelings and accept it.
That’s why ACT teaches you mindfulness skills to deal with the painful thoughts and feelings.
These mindfulness skills teach you to:
Once you get good at these mindfulness skills you can more easily activate your “observing self” which is the part of you that can step outside of the thinking part and then observe what it’s doing rather than being wrapped up and overwhelmed by your emotions.
This is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
It’s scientifically proven way to reduce anxiety which I have used to completely overcome my social anxiety disorder, and which I use with great success to help my clients do the same.
EFT combines elements of cognitive therapy, somatic intervention, and brief exposure therapy.
It uses all the techniques from the other therapies, but adds an essential piece for stress reduction which is tapping on specific stress release points on the body which makes it BY FAR MORE EFFECTIVE than all the others out there.
Since this technique looks a bit odd, I was extremely skeptical in the beginning myself. But I have applied it to myself successfully, have researched scientific proof that it works, have undergone training and have healed over a hundred people of several different emotional issues. Including tens of social phobia’s…
This stuff really works. Have a look at this video below:
This weird technique is an amazingly effective form of social anxiety treatment.
A social anxiety (disorder) consists of negative limiting beliefs. These are all learned somewhere in life and by applying EFT in the right way, you can unlearn these beliefs, and install positive beliefs.
I would like to encourage you to get some form of treatment you thinks suits you best. Trying to fix social anxiety by yourself is at best extremely challenging.
So set aside some time to investigate things, and decide to let go of your suffering so you can feel at your best when you are interacting with others.
