Changing Your Beliefs 101 Part 1/3

Do you have trouble figuring out how to change your beliefs for the better?

If you’ve read any good self help book you are probably aware of the fact that your negative, irrational beliefs are holding you back in life.

And that once you are able to successfully change them, your experience of the world will change. And that this results in feeling better…

Very inspiring indeed! But… how do you actually do that?!

After a lot of trial and error I have found a 5 step process that teaches you how to change your beliefs permanently.

This process I will teach you in this article. Following the 5 step procedure below will teach you how to change your beliefs so you can improve your life for the better.

How To Change Your Beliefs Process Step 1:

“Become aware”

For successfully overcoming limiting beliefs you first have to become aware of which beliefs are holding you back.

Use the following to uncover them:

Step I: Figure out what you want, your outcome. You first need to know what it is that you exactly want. Be very precise here.

Step II: Once you have your outcome, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What’s stopping me to get my outcome?
  • Why can’t I do it right now?
  • What does this say about me?
  • What negative things do I expect will happen?

Let’s take the following example:

Say that your outcome is to be able to comfortably look people in the eye.

“I comfortably look people in the eye.”

You then ask yourself:

  • What’s stopping me to comfortably look people in the eye?
  • Why can’t I comfortably look people in the eye?
  • What does it say about me that I can’t look people in the eye?
  • What negative things do I expect will happen when I look people in the eye?
  • What does not feel safe about looking people in the eye?

The answers you get to these questions are your limiting beliefs.

How To Change Your Beliefs Process Step 2:

Start to challenge your beliefs.

How To Change Your Beliefs Process Step 3:

“Pain to the old, pleasure to the new”

Your brain always moves away from pain and towards pleasure. So you want to associate massive pain to the old belief and immense pleasure to your new belief.

“All personal breakthroughs being with a change in beliefs. So, how to change your beliefs? The most effective way is to get your brain to associate massive pain to the old belief. You must feel deep in your gut that not only has this belief cost you pain in the past, but it’s costing you in the present and, ultimately, can only bring you pain in the future. Then you must associate tremendous pleasure to the idea of adopting a new, empowering belief.” Anthony Robbins

OK. Think of how the old one has messed up your life. Ask yourself:

  • What’s going to happen to my level of happiness, freedom and fulfillment if I keep thinking this way?
  • What’s my life going to be like in 5, 10, 20 years if I keep this belief?
  • What pain has it caused me in the past?
  • How is it messing up my life right now?

Make it as depressing as possible.

Now after you’ve done this, break your depressive state. Realize that it’s only in your mind.

To get out of your state, jump up and down! Run up and down the stairs, listen to loud upbeat music, dance. Laugh hysterically, do a handstand! Anything to get out of this state.

Now that you’ve broken your depressive state comes the fun part! Make the new, positive belief as awesome, inspiring, pleasurable and exciting as possible!

Think of how the new belief is going to improve your life.

Think of what is going to be possible. How is changing this going to influence your life in an amazing way? What is going to improve? How much more happiness, joy and fulfillment will you get if you adopt this belief?

The more pain to the old and the more pleasure to the new you associate, the faster you are overcoming limiting beliefs.

How To Change Your Beliefs Process Step 4:

Use affirmations & afformations

These two amazing tools will help you to powerfully install your new beliefs in your subconscious mind. This will greatly speed up the implementation of the new belief.

How To Change Your Beliefs Process Step 5:

“Take Action”

The last step is being proactive.

Try to look for evidence in the real world of your new belief being true. Interpret the smallest things as proof that your new belief is coming true.

Every time you find some evidence your belief grows stronger. And the stronger the belief grows, the more evidence you will find!

General Advice On How To Change Your Beliefs

As a last bit of advice I like to tell you that you should take your time for this. Set out an hour a day to do this work.

Use step 1 to find as many limiting beliefs as you can find and write them down. Use steps 2 and 3 to challenge them and start doubting them. Use step 4 and 5 for the most poisonous beliefs you have.

The most poisonous beliefs are your core beliefs about yourself. Changing these has the most impact.

The bad news is that your identity beliefs are the most challenging to change. Challenging, using affirmations or afformations will help, but just a bit.
