Does this makeup make it easier to overcome your social anxiety?

Hi, my name is Sebastiaan Van der Schrier. I’m a former social anxiety disorder suffer and I’m a social confidence coach. I’ve been coaching people for a long time.

And I have podcasts and I specialize in combining the best of traditional psychology with the best of Eastern energy psychology, of which we are most familiar with, EFT -Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping).

And what am I holding in my hand?

I’m holding in my hand a can of makeup!

And do I use makeup?

Well…it’s a bit of a story.

How does it relate to overcoming social anxiety?

Well, here we go.

First of all, I’ve used makeup to try to overcome my social anxiety a long, long time ago. I probably told you this story at one point because I learned that it’s called “flooding”. If you do the thing you’re absolutely most afraid of, supposedly, that will be the end of that which you’re afraid of.

I was most afraid of embarrassing myself, so I bought some makeup.

And I bought the brightest red lipstick, smeared it over my lips, made circles around my eyes, and went into the city starting conversations with people. A super scary thing to do, couldn’t sleep days in advance anticipating how that was going to be. But I did it. And it’s extremely awkward and uncomfortable. People are like what’s wrong with you, laughing at me, pointing their fingers at me, staring at me, like the most horrible thing that you basically imagined.

And indeed, after about half an hour, four to five minutes, my awkwardness intensity started to drop.

And after an hour, I didn’t care so much anymore.

And I felt great.

And I don’t care what people think anymore, blah, blah, blah.

Then, a week later, it was back.

So, it didn’t really work!

So what is this then?

Does this help?

Well, this is a bit of a story.

I was in Austria last July or August and it was sunny, and it was in summer. At one point I’m looking in the mirror. And I’m looking at my forehead (I’m 37 now), and I’m like, hey, my skin is…what the hell is happening to my skin. It looks ugly. There’s this coloration in it. I’ve never seen this before what’s going on?

So, my sister used to be a beauty therapist. No, she went to school for becoming a beauty therapist. She, in the end, didn’t become a beauty therapist. But she went to school for it.

So, I contacted my sis and like, Hey, look at my forehead, and I show her she’s like, Oh, yeah, yeah, you’ve got sun skin or sun allergy or some kind of a skin condition because you never use any sunscreen. And yeah, that’s what’s gonna happen to your skin.

Seb: Alright, so how do I get rid of it?

Sister: Well, you can’t really get rid of it that easily.

Seb: Okay, that sucks. How do I get rid of it?

And the story I’m about to tell is a metaphor.

So, it has a deeper meaning. So pay attention.

So, I wanted to get rid of this problem that I had. And she’s like, Well, it’s not that easy to get rid of this problem.

Seb: Okay, so what can I do to get rid of it? Or what can I do to reduce it?

Sister: Well, you can go and get laser surgery.

Seb: Alright, that sounds intense.

Sister: It’s not too bad. It’s not too expensive. And what they do is they burn like the cells and it re-awakens the cells that are behind it or something, and that restores, that’s going to restore your natural ability to get your normal color back.

Seb: Okay, sounds interesting.

And a couple of weeks later, I’m back in Holland, and I go with my sister to one of these laser clinics. And I talked to the lady and she’s like, Oh, yeah, we’ve seen that before we do treat that. But you can’t be in the sun then, for six weeks.

I’m like, All right. Well, what happens if I do go into the sun?

Therapist: Well, if you do go into the sun, you risk that it’s going to damage things, and it’s going to end up scarring, and it’s going to be a lot worse than it is now.

Seb: Okay, I do not want to do that. I do not want to expose myself in that way. That’s not an option for me.

See how that’s a parallel.

So, a lot of people have this problem of Social Anxiety. And they’re told that they need to face their fears, and they’re like, that’s too difficult for me to do. I can’t do that. I’m not going to do that.

And there are also some people that force themselves to do it. And the anxiety actually gets worse. That’s also possible.

So, the story continues.

I’m like, Alright, yeah, that’s not an option then I’m sorry to have wasted your time but I’m not interested in this laser treatment.

I contacted my sis again, or I saw my sis again. I’m like,  Alright. I’m not going to do that. Because I’m not going to stay out of the sun for six weeks. I like the sun. That’s not going to happen. Is there not an alternative option?

She’s like, Well, there’s an alternative option, but it’s not going to go away instantly. It takes a bit of time, you need to invest your time in it, and it’s going to be more gradual.

I’m like, All right, what is it?

She’s like, Well, it’s this cream. This (pertaining to the can of makeup).

And it’s expensive, like 50 euros like $60-70. And you need to apply it every day. And supposedly, there’s some kind of stuff inside there. And that’s going to restore your skin.

…Okay, interesting.

So she’s like, I’ll get it for your birthday.

So my birthday, September 19. So, I got it for my birthday. And I’ve been using it since. And as I’m shooting this video, it’s now December 1st. So, I’ve been using it for about two and a half months.

And if you look at my forehead, it’s a lot better, you still see it a bit, but it’s a lot better.

And it was very easy to do. I just applied in the morning.

It’s just a little bit of application. And that’s it, not that much work.

And yet, two and a half months later, the problem is significantly reduced.

That is also a metaphor.

It’s the tapping metaphor.

So, while this is not exactly a perfect metaphor, because, with tapping, you actually experience immediate relief.

And when I started applying this, I didn’t see any relief. It just took a bunch of time.

But when you want to overcome your social anxiety, it’s not going to happen just like this.

It’s gonna take some time and some effort and some dedication over a period of time.

But then when you look back to how it was a couple of months ago if you’ve been applying your makeup if you’ve been doing your tapping every day, then you look back and you’re like, wow, I made a lot of progress. It’s a lot better now.

And we live in a society where we want instant results.

We want everything quickly.

We want our fix right now.

And a lot of us have become lazy and unwilling to do something about a problem that bothers us a lot. Because we want instant results, we want a quick fix.

And if we don’t get a quick fix, well, then it’s not worth my time.

Well, it actually is worth your time.

So what you want to do is you want to find something that works.

I think my sister told me (I’m not exactly sure) this is the best that’s out there. And well, I do know that that’s what she said. But what I don’t know for sure is that she said that it was scientifically proven.

Tapping is scientifically proven.

102 studies backing up its effectiveness. Published in peer-reviewed journals, five meta-analyses, which is the highest standard above randomized control trials. Five of those meta-studies have been done on tapping proving its effectiveness, showing very large effect sizes. Meaning, it’s a huge significance in terms of its effect.

So it’s proven to be effective.

And you just need to start applying it.

So, what you want to do is you want to use the best, you want to use it over and over, and then stick with it for a while.

Now that’s hard for people to do.

It’s very challenging for people to do.

And that’s why I created my FREE 30-Day Social Confidence challenge that’s going to happen very, very soon – on the first of January 2022.

And here, I give you a little bit of makeup every day, so to speak.

I give you a bit of guided tapping each day.

What happens after you’ve signed up for this, is you get a few short videos that show you what to do and what to expect.

And then, when it’s actually the first of January, you get an email from me, you read that email (takes you about five minutes), and then you see a little video you click on the video. And then it’s five minutes of me on screen like, this guiding you through some tapping, you’ll feel some relief.

Some people will feel a little bit of relief.

Some people feel profound relief.

That’s it end of day one.

Now you go to day two, the same thing you read email, five minutes, 10 minutes

Here, you learn something about yourself, you learn the problem a little bit better. You know why it exists, you know how we can chip away at it, you get some insights, you get some stories from former clients, you start to build up your hope.

Anyway, at the end of that email, there’s not a little video click the video again, five or 10 minutes of tapping.

Again, you’ll feel some relief.

Again, you feel a little bit better.

And this process continues for 30 days.

It’s super simple.

All you do is read a short email, tap along with a video, and bit by bit you start to feel more and more and more relief.

And underneath each of these videos, you see hundreds and hundreds of comments of people that are reporting on the relief that they’re getting.

You’ll read about people that are sharing their stories.

We’re going through this challenge as a community so you’re no longer feeling alone, you’re no longer feeling so weird that you have this issue, because lots of others are reporting it as well.

And people are reporting the progress. So, it’s very inspiring to keep going and to be on that journey.

This is probably not the most effective metaphor that I’ve used. But I was in the bathroom yesterday, and I saw that thing I’m like, there’s a lot of links between the journey to social confidence. And me getting my normal skin back using this thing. And I didn’t think too much of it, but I’m like, hey, you know, I might as well try it, I’ve got nothing to lose.

Plus, I’m getting it for free from my sister, right?

She’s giving it to me for my birthday. I’m giving this to you for free as well just so you can get an experience of it.

And if you’re like any of the 1000s of people who have gone through it before, you’re going to find this profoundly liberating and massively life-transforming.

If that’s something you’re interested in, go to bit.ly/socialconfidencechallenge and register yourself now.

And you can start off 2022 with increased social ease and a lot less social anxiety. Go to bit.ly/socialconfidencechallenge  and I would love to see you inside the challenge.
