So, what exactly is that?
According to Wikipedia.com:
“A comfort zone indicates the limited set of behaviors and environments that a person can engage in without becoming anxious.”
Let me try to explain it in a bit more clear way by giving you two examples:
Say that you feel comfortable being with one or two friends. But when you are in a group setting, you feel anxious.
Then being with one friend is inside, and being in a group setting is outside your comfort zone.
Say that you feel confident joking around with your family and friends. But when you are around colleagues you refrain from doing so because you feel anxious. You don’t feel comfortable enough to joke around and so you don’t do it.
Joking around with your friends is within your comfort zone, joking around with your colleagues is outside it.
Since going outside this zone feels uncomfortable, most people live their whole lives inside it. They emotionally don’t dare to go outside it, into unfamiliar territory.
What about you? Are you someone that only does what is familiar to you and what feels comfortable? Do you get out of your comfort zone?
I know for myself that I had to really push myself to get out of my comfort zone when I was suffering from social anxiety. I had to use all the psychological tricks I could get my hands on.
And I still struggled to persist in doing so… If you are reading this -having social anxiety yourself, you know what I’m talking about. There’s just such an amount of pressure that it seems too challenging to keep up the behavior for long periods of time.
It takes huge amounts of courage and determination.
But ultimately, to overcome your social fears, you have to get outside your comfort zone.
In this article I will give you a rundown of how I accomplished doing this for myself. I provide a link to the website that enormously helped me, and I will give you some mindsets and tips on how to more comfortably get outside your comfort zone yourself.
When you have a social phobia you have a very small comfort zone. Stepping outside it is an intense and highly anxiety-ridden experience.
I could, with a lot of courage do it from time to time, but I could never keep up with the behavior. It was just too much pressure.
When you are socially-phobic, stepping out of your familiar areas is much more challenging than it is for “normal” people. There are just too many negative emotions.
That’s why I highly recommend going to this website and learning and using the tools that you find there. Or, better yet…

For now, the below techniques will help you to more persistently explore your boundaries.
Figure out what your dream life is and visualize it. Make your self image one that has already achieved the dream life. See yourself as that person in your mind. Our brain wants something to work towards, a target. So give it a good one!
To uncover the beliefs that are stopping you to move beyond your current boundaries, ask yourself:
Once you have uncovered these limiting beliefs, go change them here:
Steps To Overcoming Limiting Beliefs
Start to incorporate a new, positive habit into your life until it’s familiar to you. Then start another one, and another one.
By doing this you expand your imaginary walls. If you keep doing this, eventually stepping outside your comfort zone will become a habit to you.
I am living in a different country every year. I have a very unusual job. I travel the world, I am agnostic and I say what’s on my mind in almost all situations.
I’m not stating this to brag, but to illustrate that I practice what I preach. For me THIS is what’s normal, this is what life is for ME.
And you know what, I’ve been laughed at and flat out ridiculed for the choices I make in my life. But I am happy and I live the life of MY dreams.
Create your own life for yourself. Make your dream life a goal and go for it, no matter what people think of it.
I would like to advise you to do whatever you have to do to overcome these mental barriers. Staying your whole life within the same mental limits will cause you to live a life full of frustration and regret.
If you are old, thinking back on life; You don’t want to be saying “I wish I did this and I wish I did that…” or “You know, if I was still young I would definitely…”
